J.B. to France
"The Charter is a truth". Of truth, a very mighty pretty
epigram. But after conquering a King with force of arms,
are you thus to be conquered by his Highness with an
epigram? Bravest, most generous of mankind! are
you thus to be made dupes.
All this is for those among you who are governed
by words. Feelings – feelings of human and other sensitive
beings – these were the sole objects of my regard:
feelings of pleasure & pain, and interests arising out
of those feelings.
The Charter is a truth! A mighty pretty
truth! a truth that means means any thing, or
nothing: just what the God upon the throne, and
his worshippers please it should mean: that
and nothing.
I wonder whom this epigram had for its inventor.
He ought to be – he of course will be – well
rewarded.
This epigram, this apple of discord –
cannot remain for ever. Sooner or later, if not
already interpreted, it will be – it must be
interpreted, and b interpretation changed.
Now for an amendment – an equivalent
or to substitute: call it which you please. I care not
which the amendment may of the two be the
which is provided always it be
name of the amendment, provided always that is
the term in which you will see it proposed it be adopted.
Yes, which the Epigram While or remains unchanged, your
rights – your liberties – every thing that is most
dear to you – every thing that you have
fought for, and is every thing that you have conquered – continues
hanging upon a hair; and his Highness transfigurated into his Majesty may at any time cut it.
