1830. Augt. 6
J.B. to France Review

Is it by the Charter that he is to have been
made? This may, for aught I know, very
for aught I know very beautiful – but it if so,
it is somewhat more beautiful than true.

The Charter is a piece of paper. A
piece of paper is a thing: a thing that is made.
It is not a person; a person by whom persons
as well as things are made.

The person by whom this same thing
called a Charter was made, is Charles the
tenth. But Charles the tenth is the person
by whom thus disguised in the form of a piece
of paper his Highness is pleased to say that he
has been made? Well then: if yes, then to him
he must resort, on him he must his Ex Majesty must such his New Majesty rely for causing
self his new Majesty him to continue to be that which he
has been made. By you he will not have been
made. By Charles the tenth he will have been
made. By Charles the tenth, by of whom he will
thus be the Alter-idem – as they say at Naples.
