J.B. to France against Death§ XIXI Special Question
(7)

20. What is indeed manifest is – that the pleasure, derived
by one of two enemies men from the suffering pain contemplation
of the pain of one other, can never rise so high as to
constitute an equivalent for that same pain.

21. But, what is no less manifest, is – that if those there
divers persons, by each of whom a pleasure is derived
from the contemplation of the a pain suffered by one other,
a number may, on every each occasion be assigned the aggregate
of whose pleasure shall be constitute not merely an equivalent
but more than an equivalent for such single-seated
pain.

22. Note here that not more than, perhaps not so
much as half the value of amount on the death-requiring side
of the account has as yet been set down. Suppose
death-punishment not inflicted, not only will the pleasure the consequence is – that
the pleasure
Of vindictive satisfaction not be received by the relatives of not by the relatives of the patriot slain, not only will
the patriots slain, but but a positive pain, derived
from the thoughts notion of the inadequacy of the suffering by in the
other part be experienced most surely undergone: a mass of pain
which the comparative multitude of the Sufferers of it considered
will be found much , than the sum of that which in the breast of the relatives and other connections that of the deliquents
can will be produced by the consideration of the differences between punishment in the shape of death, and punishment in the shape of any other shape that could be
given to it.

23. In the algebraic mode of notation, might be
given found a formula in which the claim in this account and the supposed
amount of the balance, might stand expressed: and, to
among my beloved and admired fellow citizens of the Polytechnich
School, some there might be, to whom an exhibition
of this sort might afford gratification to a greater or less amount
and appear present itself as placing the subject in a point of the more
conspicuous. But, to the far greater number of you, the sight would,
if I mistake not be rather a formidable one and accordingly they
shall not be annoyed by it: by calling by one letter of the alphabet the pain of death if experienced
by the Ex-Minister, and by another the pain of disappointed resentment
experienced by the relatives
of the slain patriots in the
event of the rare infliction
of the death punishment, no
real additional information
would I think be (it
seems to me) be afforded.
