One of them was a trifle beyond that age: the other
a trifle short of it. How can that be (says somebody); at an
earlier age the rules of the House forbid admittance. True: but,
from parent age and reputation, connivance was expected; and
expectation was not disappointed.

force enough surely in these
two to stagger the united
force of all objections which
the nature of the case admits of.

By two examples such as these, no bad preparation surely is
made for the propositions they are brought to support : by two such ex-
amples, even had they no aid from reasoning.

But have they no aid from reasoning? Let us go on and see.

Look at the exclusion establishing rule : behold the assertion
involved in it. For this trust (naming it) all who have not
arrived at this age (naming it) are inept. Mind now the
of this opinion : mind the answer to it. By you—by you, who
know nothing of any one of them, these men are all of them
deemed inept: by the majority of those who know them, not one of
them but is deemed apt ; or he would not have been chosen.
Oh ye of little wisdom! Your juniors, these— your betters—for
is not youth the reason of virtue?—these you have not
proved to be unfit for this great trust. But if in this ease
may such thing as unfitness has place, it is on your part
rather than on theirs. On your part it has for proof this
shallowness— this precipitancy—this unreflectingness

Then as to magnitude of interest strength of motives for
making an apt choice. When the present generation is
passed away, as to aptitude on the part of any suc-
ceeding generation scarce any motive have you for
troubling yourselves about the matter : to them belong
exclusively all motives.

The Electors in question—what inducement have they to
make any such wrong choice? And if there is no inducement,
what probability is there? what danger?

The testimony of experience in the instance of two dis-
tinguished individuals you have just been seeing. Behold
how the same evidence in the instance of two entire
nations : two exemplifications, each upon a national scale.
In England and its dependencies (Asiatic nations out of the
question) 21 the age of admission at all times : and no
experienced from it, or so much as alleged, at any time.

So also in the Anglo-American States.
