but dignity. And this support likewise requires its supports –
Dignity of his crown, dignity of his throne, splendour and
lustre of Crown, throne, not to speak of sceptre, – all these
things require support; support they must all of them
have, or he is no better than a mere President; and down in
the suds tumble King, throne, crown, and sceptre all together.
Well: and this support – what is it that it must be
made of? Answer – Gold. Yes, of gold: for no particle of it
will anything but gold serve; gold, including those things
which gold purchases: of gold thus employed never can
there be too much: – never can there be too much? No;
never can there be enough. At the head of those things
which gold purchases, stand soldiers: of these a multitude
forming a standing army, the larger the better, must at
all times be kept on foot: Soldiers in gay attire, with
Officers to command them clothed in gold, and firelocks
shedding lustre by their polish: nor of these sources of
splendour with their et ceteras can there ever be
enough. But, these supports to royalty – shall they
be idle? Forbid it, Honour! Forbid it, Glory! employment
must be found for them: and War is the
name of that employment.
This nonsense – this pickpocket nonsense – do I do wrong
to Kingship in saying that it is by the effusion of this nonsense
it is actually maintained. Look at England:
look at our matchless Constitution, as it is called, as it is
so unblushingly, loudly, and constantly called, – by those
who profit by the abuses it is composed of, and those
whom the combined power of authority-begotten prejudice
and interest-begotten prejudice has made their dupes:
