1830. Nov. 30
JB to Belgium
JB's Addresses to France.
Subject matter King or No King.
Objection – already decided this.
Answer – Yes: but remain for
consideration
1. Power
2. Co-rulers – their shares
3. Pay.
To this – not to late to speak.
having to say what I have
as to Kingship I must give
you preparatory explanation
lest you should
regard me as speaking
out of station and beside
the purpose.
In choosing a King then
you having made a bad
bargain make I say
the best of it.
Like a tyger a King is an
animal essentially mischievous:
remains to be
shown how his mischievousness
may be minimized.
For doing this
1. I bring to view his mischievous
properties.
2. Distinguish irremediable
from remediable.
3. Explain the irremediable
ones.
4. So, the remediable ones
with their remedies.
Confession – Doing this I
give reasons against
Kingships. But this was
unavoidable.
---page break---
In speaking of what is bad
reference explicit
is necessarily made to what
is good as a standard or
object of comparison.
Follows then an exposition
of my standard of set
of arrangements.
Bad Kingly properties
will remedies
to the effects of them.
1. Uselessness – remedy
none.
2. Inaptitude – remedy
none.
3. Costliness, remediable
4. Corruptiveness, remediable.
Matter of corruption
being so of delusion
the effect of the delusion
making men
take inaptitude for
matchless aptitude.
Midas turned every
thing to gold – King, to
corruption.
