Our Author opens with a Definition; than which nothing
could be more instructive, were it at all instructive:
a definition of that much agitated and
important word Law. If indeed it were indeed
a definition, framed so as to answer the ends of a definition nothing , I say, could be more instructive:
but unhappily like so many other pretended
definitions of the same word, it is nothing but
a rhetorical paraphrase.
What the office
of a Definition
is.
What is the office of a definition? In the first place To convey to our
apprehension some idea as signified by the word
defined, and to teach us to distinguish the idea [so] signified
[by that word] from the any idea that can be signified
by any other word. This it does in the first place by referring
the thing in question to a class an assemblage of objects known
to us already in some measure by means of other
articles with which we are already become familiar.
such a class an assemblage or The name of such an class assemblage is what logicians call
a genus. In the next place If the name of a
genus have has been given in common to an assemblage of individuals
in common, it is on the supposition
that of some quality or other being possessed in common
by every individual of that assemblage. By
being told therefore that the thing signified by the
word in question is of such a genus, we can learn
thus much of it, that it possesses the common some one quality
belonging to at best that is possessed by every individual of that genus. In the next place
