What the office
of a Definition is.
by enabling us to Distinguish it from every one of those
other articles of the assemblage to which it was referred.
This is done by telling us of some quality that is possessed
by the thing signified by the term defined, and is
not possessed by any of the things signified by the
above genus. Of some Inability, I say, that which is possessed by this thing
and is not by any of these: or else what comes to the
same [thing] some assemblage of qualities the whole every one
of which is possessed by this, and none at all, or
if some not all by any of those. This quality
or assemblage of qualities thus peculiar to the thing
signified by the word defined, is by Logicians
termed its differentia. Assign this genus, and
this differentia, and you have convey'd a determinate
idea of the thing signified by the word defined,
as far as to as many to whom that idea is to can be convey'd by
words.
E -exemplified upon
the word Hyæna.
I hear mentioned the word tygers: Hyæna: I know not what
it means. I ask you to define it. You begin with
telling me that it means an animal. How by
this being told thus much I should be no wiser than
I was before if I were not already acquainted with
some other of those things to which this name of animal
is given in common, and with that quality which
being possessed by them in common was the occasion
