5) Law in general.
The generic name
assigned by it, viz:
not intelligible unless
by means of
the Specific name
itself that is to be
defined.
to one or other of which every thing we can think of that has existence is reducible,
Substances, themselves modes, of Substances, and Inabilities of
substances. For us to be acquainted with it then, it
must belong to some one or other of these classes,
and we must be able to say which of them it does
belong to.
This I doubt can never be the case with this genus
of our Author's; , "rule of Law action",
I can judge only for myself. As to myself I know
that when I have it is not from hearing pronounced the words "rule of
"action," I have no that I can obtain any conception of any class of objects
at all; and it is then only that I begin to have
some confused conception of such a class, when I understand
that [it] the term is applied to [those] [that class of] objects, of that class which are is signified
by the term Law. If this be the case with
people that have defined other people, so far then is the definition from
contributing to render intelligible the thing word defined,
that it to that word itself that is ours all the intelligibility
it possesses.
Whence it became
necessary for him
to adopt it.
Whether the genus "rule of action" it be such as can [indicate] serve to indicate
any existent class of objects wherewith we are acquainted, we
shall better understand more clearly see, when we come by and
by to observe what those objects are to which
(through the medium of this supposed species of it
Law) of our Author has applied it. There are as
we shall see presently in the first place one class
of objects really existing; viz: that or at least a
