Whence it became
necessary for him
to adopt it.
part of that which our Author calls marks by the name of
Law Municipal; : in the next place, several classes
of objects merely metaphorical, objects which have no existence
elsewhere than in the imagination of those
who speak of them. These imaginary objects having all of them
under this name of Law, been very glibly and copiously discoursed of by
those whom out author copied, this
name of Law, he took the existence of these is what he took
for granted; on which account it was necessary so to define the word Law, as to include
them. To define Law, some [genus generic appellation] must
be found for it; this genus appellation then was to be such
an one as should not be seen manifestly to exclude them:
of course it could not be any one that is in use
to signify any determinate really existent class of
objects, because + ; under no such class would these imaginary
+ there is no such class
but what would appear
manifestly to exclude
them;
objects come. No expression therefore
could for a moment answer the purpose, unless it were some struggling
one could be found which [in the way of metaphor or otherwise]
had been used as synonymous on some occasion
with the term in the plan of to be defined. such an expression
I take it is the phrase "Rule of action".
Of the class of the objects signified by the term name "Law"
some conception more or less clear is, as has been intimated convey'd to
us, as has been mentioned by the have mention of that name. If this be the
case it is because this class of objects belongs to some
one of those three all comprehensive only [existent] I classes +. If so To which of
