8) Law in general.

What class of beings
a Law belongs to

any words then? No: but of such words only alone as are
signs of, as serve to express, we may say, a command volition

What is a Volition? It is an operation of the mind:
it is a mode of that sort of substance which we
call animal.

A Law then is a something serving that serves to express a mode.
It is, we may say, the expression of a mode. By this
if it be true, we know that it is the expression of something
real: for modes we know and particularly
this mode volition, are something real really existent as we know by
consciousness. This is what it expresses but what
it is itself. It is, we have said an assemblage
of words: words are either spoken or written.
Words spoken are sounds; sounds are certain vibrations (i.e. motions)
of our organs excited by vibrations (i.e.
motions again) of the substance called the air. Motions are
modes: sounds therefore are modes: Words spoken
therefore are modes: but these we shall pass over:
as it is so seldom that what we mean by the term
Law is confined to such fleeting existence as these.

There is mean by words as
A volition of which Law is the expression but what has
signified the sounds significative of it signified themselves
and as we say recorded by certain written
words: these words are assemblages of the parts of some
substance as other dispersed in a particular figure.
The figure of a substance is the situation of the parts of
that substance with respect to one another: situation
