9) Law in general.

What class of beings
a Law belongs to.

of a substance is a mode of it that substance. Words written
then, we if we consider them only as being the figures which they
dbe parts of the substance in question are disposed, are , modes; of are consider them as the parts themselves
so figured disposed, are substances. A Law then is
an assemblage if objects written words is an assemblage
of either of modes significative of modes, or
of substances significative of modes: in either case
of something real: of something of the reality whereof
we have the testimony of our senses.

Five imaginary
sorts of Laws spoken
of by our Author
viz:

Knowing thus what is real among the objects characterised
by the name of Law, we shall know see what is
imaginary. It may be as well in this place to anticipate a little, and give
for all a list of all as many of these imaginary sorts of
Law that as he has spoken of.

Physical Laws of
Nature, as they may
be called, three Sorts.

These are 1st Laws that are observed by natural involuntary
agents acting in virtue by their own natural powers. 2dly
Laws that are observed by the same natural involuntary agents
in virtue of powers communicated to them by voluntary
agents. 3dly Laws that are observed by voluntary agents,
in respect of those such actions of theirs that as are not voluntary.
Those three are so many branches of one sort of imaginary Law
called Law of Nature: a sort that may be called the Physical Law of Nature.

Moral Laws of Nature

4 4thly Laws that ought to be observed, as is supposed
+ whether they are observed
or not: to
and this without regard to their
heirs is not having members
of every political
state.

that denomination. 5thly Laws that, ought to be
as is supposed, to be observed by such of the same agents

Law of Nations

as are members of one political state, in their dealing
with the subjects of another, as such: This 5th sort is
