Right explainable by Punishment along explainable.
In short this way of giving an account of the
memory of the word Right not only is satisfactory
but is the only one that ever can be so satisfactory.
Possessed of this, if we assent to the
truth of it, we have nothing further beyond to look for.
We have always something beyond to look for
till we arrive at this.
We can not explain Right but we explain
Wrong. We cannot conceive one but we conceive
the other. For Wrong consists
in the doing of some one at least of those sorts of
acts by the punishing of which Right is
established created, constituted
Right or Wrong then can never be understood
by those who have not Punishment in view.
Our Author in the account he gives of them in speaking of them no
where brings Punishment into view. The consequence
is, there is no understanding there from
our Author. It is manifest our Author does not
himself understand them. Although he has
written four Books about them and these
four books are all his work contains.
Right and Wrong not referable referred to Law fine:
to a source from whence Punishment is deserved,
impart refer to a sentiment of approbation or disapprobation said him who thinks are the actions to which
these epithets are applied.
This is all they
refer to in the first instance.
That apply or disappear may
have different grounds. Those
of different grounds are what
is called the different foundations.
