And let it be remembered with respect to concerning all Legislators
or pretended Legislators, that it is
their ignorance, ignoranceincapacity, only (incapacity, pardonable in human
ones, but still their ignorance incapacity) that
can force men to resort to the spirit
and reason of the Law, in departure from the
common import of the words of it. That it is
for him who means to be understood, to call
up directly the ideas of those actions he would have
done or not done, by the words that are in

resources of imposture.

If the ideas or sets of ideas that a word is in use for be
more than one, they are never so numerous nor so notorious but that
a diligent and intelligent observer may collect and
distinguish all such of them who if the use as are to such a degree resembling, as that
one which is not meant to be called up by the word in question
shall be in danger of being embraced instead of that which is. The
equivocality of words is a cruel and an obstinate
disease. Kinds⊞ ⊞ But a proper prophylactic
regimen may offer of itself in general save
men from falling into
it. And even when fallen Division and Definition orderly diligently
applied are afford a certain cure.
