Gaming
A man pays more punctually his debts at
play, than his debt by purchase to tradesmen. Why? Because
he has more to hope and to fear from
those he plays games with, than from those he
buys of. He is more constantly under
their eye. His society is with them. The
same moral sanction impells stimulates in one case
as in the other, to payment observance of the contract: but it acts
more powerfully in the first case than in
the latter.
Nothing is unlawful that is the intended clear intent
of the Legislature. Nothing can be void.
To say it is a contradiction.
Nothing is gained to Liberty by such language,
and much is lost to common sense. Yet
it is much used by the advocates for liberty.
We hear it every day. I am always sorry
when I hear it.
The Legislature cannot do that which is unlawful
[as it is not unlawful if they do it] But
it may do that which shall render it inexpedient
to obey it. many are the acts it may be conceived to do
[an endless indeterminate variety of acts], any of which were
it to do, in who should first take up arms,
