Law in general. Above we have given
the difficulties but in it that, presented themselves occurr
at first sight. This last is the explanation
that offers itself at a second. It is
to so satisfactory, that we shall I was resolved to say no more
about the matter; but pass & was e'en passing on to another head.
But luckily All at In the mean time, it struck me that it would not be unedifying
if we could by accident discover
how the difficulties came to (make their appearance) arise
and how the explanation came to be
wanted. Instruction marks the footsteps of
great men.
There is one thing our great man could
do: that is, read. There is another thing
he could not do: that is, extract the spirit
of what he read. It is with this
Commentator as with so may other Commentators:
his appetite is better than
his digestion.
Montesquieu he had read. Montesquieu
had written upon he same topic of Laws in general in
a manner almost as unintelligible about as unintelligible tho' not
quite so inconsistent (as our Author). The
errors of Montesquieu were the errors of an
original genius struggling under the heap
