Law of Nature.
is curious enough: tho' of what use it can be here
or anywhere is more than I can imagine. He seems
supposes to put a supposition, that mankind were divested of self-love:
meaning I suppose of sensibility, of the capacity of
receiving pain and pleasure. On this supposition,
he supposes that the greater a part of mankind
the greater part aided would have rested in ignorance.
Not that this same self-love is so necessary as one might
imagine: for Another part however he seems to suppose, might
go on without it waring a chain of metaphysical disquisitions.
In that case what should serve them for a motive
to that employment or to any other, is I confess more than I am able to comprehend.
He next does seems to do as much as intimate,
that there is no way of being happy (human Laws
we are to remember being all this while out of the question) than
by being just: and that no man can be just without
being happy. As to this matter I should be very
glad to see him make his words good;⊞ ⊞ that I might move
for shutting up Westminster
Hall, and for throwing
all Law Books
into the fire. but But what
purpose it can answer to advance an insipid observation
contradicted by the experience of every instant,
is more than I can see, unless it be to
being morality moral lessons into discredit. This seems to serve If I might have liberty
to make suppositions, I should suppose, this to have come
of his having got by heart when at College, the notable
aphorism retailed by Cicero fro the Stoics
that "Pain is no evil;"⊞ ⊞ together with other
choice morsels out of
the same kitchen, with
which young Academics
are dieted by their tutors. He then seems to give us
to understand, that the precepts of the Law of Nature
