[a}+ + To come in at p.4, of the Text. The wonder is, that the manifest contradiction repugnancy
of it our Author's propositions to real fact did not awaken him out of
his dream. It would, one should have thought,
to any man who had been at all accustomed to examine
into the import of the words employ'd by
him. The wonder is the greater, as the fictitiousness
of the "precept", the "command" in one case,
and the reality of it in the other, is all that he
could have, according to the account he gives us
of the Law of Revelation to distinguish that
from this.

The bold and inquisitive but irregular genius
of the philosopher of Malmesbury touched still
nearer upon the truth. He had got half way into
the threshold, when the fascination of habit got hold
of him and drew him back into error and confusion.
"And forasmuch as Law" says he, "(to speak properly)
"is a Command, and these dictates as they proceed
"from nature are not commands, they are not
"therefore called Laws, in respect of nature, but in
"respect of the Author of Nature, God Almighty".
