Divine Law.
Thus much for laws in general, and that of Nature
in particular. We now come to the Divine
Law. For our Author not content with
teaching us jurisprudence, chose to lecture us
in Theology
Divinity. Having sucked in Theology with
the sincere milk of Alma Mater:
his mother's milk the sincere milk of Alma Mater,, he could not forbear sprinkling
in a few drops, by way of to give a zest relief to the dry
dish he had was to set before us.
We now tread upon tender ground. From No man so
apt as our Author, when hard pressed to lay
hold of grasp the horns of the altar, to rend his clothes,
and cry out, profanation. In this he will do
as he is advised. Sacred however as is the Divine
law, and the holy scriptures that contain
it, our author's account of it may be as mysterious,
but is not quite so sacred.
"But in order to apply this" (meaning the Law of Nature) "to the particular exigencies
"of each individual, it is still necessary" proceeds our Author "to
"have recourse to reason; whose office it is to discover,
"as was before observed, what the law of Nature
"directs in every circumstance of life; by considering,
"what method will tend the most effectually to our
"own substantial happiness. And if our reason were
