"all respects; and adopted the books of Moses as the
Law of the Land". This the historian scruples not to speak of as
being the effect of "a contracted way of thinking and most violent
"enthusiasm". "The first laws were which they made" (continues
he) were grounded upon them" (upon the books of
Moses) "and were therefore very ill suited to the customs,
"of genius or circumstances of that country, and
"of those times; for which reason they have since fallen
"into disuse".

To this sort of discourse To Moses whatever
the common ones for
by the orthodox for g accounting for and justifying the present neglect of the Law of Moses,
the sticklers for the universal and perpetual authority of that Law
oppose arguments that are rather of a perplexing nature. They
rejoin, that amongst the regulations thus reprobated
in the lump, many it is true are of a local nature,
many the reason of which is plainly referable to
the peculiar circumstances of the people they were
given to. But many on the other hand say they,
are plainly of a nature not local: many such as
have no more to do with the circumstances of that
particular nation than of any other. These then if
not well suited to the "customs, the genius or circumstances of" this "country"
in this age, were not suited the circumstances
of any country in any age; were not well suited to the
circumstances of that country to which they were given
