once adopted as the governing principle, admits
of no rival, admitts not even of an associate. To
the dictates of this principle in my view, It what is are given for the a dictate
of the Law of Revelation is either opposite or conformable.
If opposite what is given for the dictate
of the Law of Revelation must be rejected; and
all we get by our researches into the scriptures from
whence we derive it is the embarassment of endeavouring
to either interpreting the passages in question perhaps
against the most obvious import of the words so as
to bring it to a conformity with the dictate of utility
in that behalf; or of reconciling our persuasion of the
authenticity of the Law with our perception of
it's repugnancy to utility: If conformable,
that consideration is of itself that, is of itself reason sufficient for adopting its or the measure: that alone
fully justifies it; and it were lost labour to look
for any other. Besides If we lay it down as a fixed participle
that⊞ ⊞ whatever Laws have been given by the Author of Revelation were meant by him to be the Author of Revelation in his Laws has made all
his Laws subservient to the happiness of the present life, that this subserviency
is an indispensable evidence of the authenticity
of what are given for such Laws that it is of their really
coming from him, to know that whether a measure is conformable
to the dictates of the principle of utility is at once the readiest
and the surest way of knowing whether it is conformable
