"This" (the remedial)(concurs our Author) 'is what
we mean properly, when we speak of the protection
of the law. I should have thought it was the
whole law that we meant: for we must
here the whole law to protect us or at best the directing
part of a municipal law with the moral
or religious sanction of it/ or else we have no—
thing.
But he now treats us with "an instance": and that
instance betrays the authority less of his retains con—
cerning this remedial part. We must afford
to this instance; because it may secure to hold us
to true instruction, the his is false.
"When the declaratory part of the law
