SECT. Interpretation.

our deviation, is more than he thinks it worth his while
to tell us. As to the occasion When the literal sense if presumed in is such
as if pursued, would carry us away, I should say, from to
the end:
as to the quantum of the deviation, so far, I
should say as is necessary for the attainment of the
ends. The end here is, the suppression of a certain
mischief: the mischief of persons bounding drawing blood from each other
in quarrel or with in the design to rob or murder. Now if the
Surgeon exposed drawing the patient's own blood man's blood that the Surgeon drew was drawn in quarrel, or with
design to rob him or murder; the Surgeon should be punished as
well as any body else: because the punishing him
would contribute to the end: the suppression of the
mischievous practice of drawing blood in that with such designs,
but if he had no such design, but meant on the contrary
to give the man patient relief from his disorder; then he ought not to be punished:
because the punishing of him could contribute
nothing to this any such end: on the contrary it would contribute
to a two very bad ends, the keeping each man in alarm for their his own condition, as seeing that innocence would be no never to be satisfied if the [man s security] being security to him against the Law: themselves.
[N.B. This is a ground of pardon]add it to the others.
the causing now not to think
themselves secure by innocence
and the deterring him making him afraid
from acts not only but in a with of embracing such opportunities as chance might throw
respect to other in his way of bettering the condition of being of use to that of others.

But now we come to the recipe of recipes [if still believed] – "The reason
"and spirit of the Law". This is the grand elixir which that restores
to life all dead Laws that wants it: that which when it flies
out of it leaves it a dead carcase. For reason as our
Author and his brother adepts rise and proclaim are fond of proclaiming in their moments
of enthusiasm, "is the life of the Law". † See 1 Comm. p.70.
