SECT. Interpretation.

This is the way he takes to put life into the Law.
I will take one of his own examples. † p.71. I am a JudgeThe Law
has been that a Brother shall not succeed to
his Brother of the half-blood. There was a reason. For This Law regulation
there was once had, let it be supposed a reason.
I know of Not that I know of any in a parenthesis: but be
it so for the example's sake. That reason
has now ceased. The half-brother sues before me for the
succession. What's to be done? am I to do? To give it him
if I may believe our Author.

For when the reason ceases, the Law itself ought
"likewise to cease with it". Another, under
Statute Law – the first that offers. Then Corn
price d rises above the usual price. The Parliament prohibits
the exportation of it for a year. The reason is the dearness of the price. In 6 months
the price sinks to its former level: that reason
ceases. I am a Cornfactor: I ship my Corn
at the 6 months' end; and it is stopped by the King's officers. I
bring my an action for whic of trespass against the officers. What
is the Judge to do? sustain my action. For
when the reason ceases, the Law itself ought
likewise to cease with it ..... Were our
Author a dead oracle of the Law, and I a corrupt
dispenser of it, I would wish for no
better warrant for my enterprizes, as far as
opinions could give warrant, than this paragraph. A thousand times over
out of sheer maladroitness,
without any harmless innocent intentions,
at least without any thus to
such a
far disparate, would our
[A thousand times over, if
strokes of the pen could
do it, would our] Author
if strokes of the pen could do it
have over thrown the Law
[from its very foundations]
that despicable
fabric, human Law,
from its very foundations

I will take compassion on the unpractised student: and thus bewildered & deluded: will not, for want of such light,
