BOOK II. SECT. I. Stat. Law. Kinds of Statutes

It costs us so many words, and that unavoidably
to do justice to our Author's various merits: to
comment upon his commentaries, to introduce
to his Introduction, to explain his explanations,
and now lastly in particular, to interpret
his methods of interpretation, that
I fear, the reader will begin to think he
has had enough of it. The ensuing Book
however, that is the ensuing Section of our
Author which is the subject of it, will be
more rich in matter than the preceding one. We begin now to descend
from the craggy region of unintelligibles;
and to
find get footing in the
champaign country territory of
of facts real and ostensible existence. The objects
we have have to represent bring
to view
will be more
familiar: and in those objects the expect
veteran practitioners in of
tje Law, if any such
should deign to join here
with us, will begin
to recognize their his
old acquaintances.
We shall now have
to speak of Statutes
such as we have seen
and handled: not ot
Laws merely, such as we men imagine, not such as men
stick with false learning have been used to dreaming of.
[We shall find more
opportunities that where we can build on, to make amends
for and an to what we shall
have occasion to pull down.]
The eye of the
enquiring reader is not completely satisfied, unless
it see all along what is meant to be built in the
room of what is attempted to be pulled down.

When the foundation is in air to pull
down is all that can be done is possible: But now
that we tread on firm ground, no faster shall
we pull down than we shall find spots
on which whereon to erect some sort of fabric, that
which it takes fills the place of, may serve as a
contrast to what is pulled down shall have been demolished.
