were for the encouragement of the discovery of the Longitude?
That the Longitude was not discovered?
This seems rather harsh to say. Benefit is certainly a
more palatable sweeter word: it were a pity to exclude shut the door
against the few occasions we can have to introduce it.
But in this forgetfulness if it is a forgetfulness
our Author is consistent. He had said He had said something we may remember† † because he
had found it said before him that there was
a sot of sanction belonging to a Law a Law might have belonging to it, called
a Reward which ⊞ ⊞ after which, by the by no more notice is taken of any such Law as has that Sanction, than if nothing had been said about the matter. tho' he now thinks afterwards of any
other Sanction for a Law than Punishment. And yet It
seems eminently (I will do not say exclusively) the nature
of Reward to procure benefits; as of Punishment
to suppress mischief. But let us hear
