BOOK III. Ch. 1. Beginning.
Hitherto we have follow'd our Author step by step:
our remarks henceforward will be but scatter'd. Of all
errors, that respect mere matters of fact, that obscure
as practical part of present knowledge, nor generate any
false practical conclusion in practise, we shall I have him in peaceable
[undisturbed] possession. Even those parts
which we pass over, might afford matter not utterly
unprofitable. But we write not here for the curious
and the idle: our business is not with antiquities but
with Jurisprudence. The past is of no value but by
the relation it bears to influence it has in preserves over the present and the future.
Let us reflect That our first concern, is to here satisfy ourselves, how the
things that are in our power ought to be: that
the knowledge of what they have been is of no further not
use, than as by pointing out the cause by the influence of which they⊞ ⊞ have been brought to what they ought to be in the few instances articles of more ancient date
in which they have been what they ought to be, and by which they
have failed of being what they ought to have been in the former
instance in which they have not been what they
ought to be they lead us in to right judgment the privilege of the means whereby by which
they may be brought to what they ought to be in future: that
in studying ho what they ought to be and how to bring
them to it, we shall never be out of the most arduous
indeed but noblest road our intellect can take travel
in: that we while⊞ ⊞ without any real views as those before us as those just mentioned we employ examine ourselves examining what they have been, there
is only that much to be said for us, that possibly we may
come in to it smooth the approaches of those the who mean to travel there.
