It being reasonable he should, he had reason to think that if he did not, he should
be thought to have acted unjustly: that in consequence
he would be liable in re to lose – in a certain
degree the goodwill of his acquaintance; lose
the benefit of a certain pro portion of their good offices,
and in short in a word, subject himself to all those inconveniences
which men subject themselves to are subjected to in being
thought to have acted conducted themselves in a manner that is deemed
unjust.
Activated by these or similar considerations, for a
certain time Carriers were in the habit upon a
loss or damage happening to the goods they carried, to
make amends. In process of time a a certain Carrier, whether
because the price of carriage was small, or the loss happen'd
not through his neglect, or because he was
poor and ill able to bear it, or from whatever
reason or pretence, refused to bear it. The owner
convened him before the Judge: the cause was heard,
and decided b in the owner's favour. The Judge
in consequence gave the Carrier to understand in consequence, that
he must make good the loss, or be worse punished. Other
Carriers seeing this, seeing this man punished, or
about to be punished for refusal, feared that they should
were they to refuse, be punished likewise, and complied, even in cases where
had it not been through fear of punishment, they
would might have not complied. It was their custom before
to do so: to observe this custom they now felt themselves obliged
