I will, at any rate, divulge the mysteries of the Law,
and give the solution of this rebus: [le mot de l'enigme ]
a rebus altogether upon a footing with those Paradoxes
ludicrously called Geographical, which are prefixed to
the of that science, to make merriment among
children. I will, at any rate give le mot
de l'enigme : tho' in so doing I should [for ever] expose to everlasting
derision the petty craft of Lawyers, and their
artifices for chicaining men into a worship of their
opinions, of which they are not worthy. I said Lawyers,
I mean the herd of Lawyers; such of which
our Author loves to set himself at the head: for
such this is not the language of the Keymis's or the
Barrington's.
