Common Law. How far consented to by the People.
most of the people's voluntary consent to it, a sort of
Law made by persons, at least a great number some hundreds of
them chosen by the people; or a sort of Law made
by companies of four men called Judges, every one
of them appointed by the Crown? Of Judges, and
of other Lawyers it is true some are, others may
hope to be, Legislators but they want not to be
told, that one out of four, is more than one out
of one eight hundred. But there was a time
when no Lawyer could hoe to be a peer Baron: when
to be a deputy of the people was to be a helpless
but of the Jury of a Tyrant: Royal indignation: Nor do those who
live now want to be told that one out of four is more
than one out of eight hundred.
☞ For the conclusion s. Inserenda.
