Ch Contracts

From the Globe & Traveller 24 August 1825.

Town Clerk's Office Colchester. A complaint was made
by Mr. S. Moss under the 4th G. IV c. 34 against Mary Ann
Brown aged 22 years for having absented herself from the
service of Messrs. Moss & Hatfield Peverel, silk throwsters. On the
18th Feby Brown contracted to serve Mess Moss & Smith for
2 years; to work from 6 a.m. till 7 in the evening for 3s.6d
a week the first year & 4s the second: she served them until about a month ago & has not since returned. The girl
stated, she had paid 1s a week for lodging and washing leaving
2s.6 only for board & clothes: that she could get little else than
dry bread to eat, & had to stand 12 hours to work: & that
her living was not adequate to the fatigue she had to undergo.
Mr Moss stated that upwards of 50 girls had absconded
lately; & that there were many who did very well on the wages
they received altho' not more than Browns. Mr. Abell the Magistrate
said it was very extraordinary that a person of her age
should make a contract of such a nature for so long a period,
knowing as she must have done the price of provisions: as
she had made a breach in her engagement, he must put the
provisions of the Act in force: but under the circumstances
of the case, he shd. order her to be imprisoned in the Boro' Gaol
& kept to hard labor for seven days only. Mr Moss told her, she
wd. have to return to his service at the expiration of her imprisonment.
She said she wd. not stop & wd. as have be in gaol during the
remaining period of her service. It was recommended in the event of
here teturning to the manufactory that she shd. apply to a magistrate for
relief if her wages were inadequate for her maintenance.
