Ch. 1 or Preface
2 1. Leading Principle employ
principle
consents employed
What on these occasions indispensably though
assumed? Assumed by both of them is the fact
that are certain proprietary principles expect generally known expressed in
generally known under the name of the principles of justice
a proposition to the truth of which an indispensably
necessary condition is that they do by abridging stand expressed
in words not only determinate and intelligible but actually
understood.
☞ Better this
"Contrary to every
principle of justice"
fallaciousness of the
use of the word principle
in that phrase
argument
"Contrary to the first principle of justice". Contrary
"to every principle opposite." In conversation common conversation In both, at the time, in Parliament
how often do we not hear both those phrases — [the one
or the other as chance determines.]
And what is it that either they either of them, amount
to? exactly nothing. What they do not profess to
express they do not express: namely the desire to
draw down point the disapprobation of the reader or the hearer to the
opinion which they are employed to combat. What
they would be thought it is desired they should be regarded
as expressing — is the ground of the words so entertained.
Altogether imaginary who is there that when put to him
considering it — altogether imaginary is there ground.
With the sense this opinion in practice is contrary
to the first principle of justice or even to every principle of
justice — that is to say — not only to those which stand first,
but others more it should seem than one besides. What are they? Be
pleased to state them or given imposition of some place
in which they may be found. Do this or submitt to the imputation
of substituting maxim to argument — in a word talking
nonsense, for between these two no evidence is there
In this case no evidence can you assign. B A short string of words without
so much
an idea of any sort
attached to them. Such
is then your instrument
of persuasion: such is
your warrant for what
you say, and for what
you do, or refuse to do in consequence.
