Judging from such to book Reports Books as, being
in print, are accessible to him, a Counsel gives his opinion
so and so, and action in a suit is commenced accordingly.
When The suit comes to a hearing: and then up
stands rises the Counsel on the side, and produces a Notebook
in which an account is given of a case exactly
similar, in which the decision pronounced was contrary:
consequence disappointment to some, encrease of uncertainty and
sense of insecurity to others. An act of Parliament inhibiting
the exhibition production or the impression of Reports of cases of an
earlier date than a two day therein mentioned might in
this way this purpose be not altogether without its uses.

What is curious is – that the first earliest document
of this kind that was ever committed to print passed through the press is not what
is commonly called a Report Book but an Abridgement
of the law: its contents are what it contains is not merely an Account
of the cases argued in such or such a particular Court from such a
time to such a time, but a general account of all
such decisions, by which soever of the Courts and at what
soever times pronounced, as it had happened to the author's
shelves to be furnished with. This work is Statham's
Abridgement: date of publication the . The earliest
printed Book of Report Book printed is Dyer's
first published in .
