1828 July 24

The very endeavour to con cause men to believe
that the Judge, whoever he may be, has it in his power
to exercise th over the Almighty the same influence which
he the Judge has over the Sheriff, and accordingly to
cause the Almighty to inflict the extra punishment whatsoever
it may be, supposed to be attached to the personation
of the ceremony, is itself a fraud, if there be any such
thing as a fraud. In the breast of every man who really believed in the religion of Jews The very words Swear not at all
considering where they may be seen would suffice be suffici proof sufficient that no such
obedience will ever be paid by the Almighty to the will of
any of his creatures: or if in this same religion a
man who entertains the contrary opinion is a believer, it
must also be his opinion that the rule of is the a
proper rule to be observed in the interpretation of the sacred
writings; and that of Swear not at all the proper interpretation
is – swear and force men to swear on a every
occasion that you please.

It is from acts not from words that the question as
between belief and non-belief is to be judged: for as to
words the words I do believe are quite as easy to pronounce
as the words I do believe.

If of fraud in this shape the origin and efficient cause,
final and efficient are demanded, the one answer at least
may be found in the profit always derived by Judges and all other men
of law by the granting grant made of the mendacity-licence
as above.

As to the various other mischiefs produced by the mendacity
licence and by the main instrument of it – imposition of the ceremony
of an oath, they belong are not for this purpose necessary:
they may be seen brought to view in the printed paper
abovementioned.
