Note that the state of things of which he was there
giving as a description was the state of things all the time at
which he was writing: the since that time the state of things
in this respect has undergone no inconsiderable alteration:
but the alteration belongs not to the present purpose.

Here ends the fourth Chapter of his book.
The work which has been the subject matter of those observations
is, it may be said – not his Commentaries – but the sort
of abridgment of them published by him under the name of the
an Analysis: containing a sort of commentary upon the
topics performed in the manner we have been seeing.
True:

This then, it must be supposed it is true, is not the work itself,
only an abridgment of it. True: but for affording to the
reader a something of a general conception of the sort of instruction obtainable
from this work of his – a sort of sweetmeat as it is an emperor
of other works on the same subject this is not
merely the best course that could have been taken, but
perhaps the only course. Of its subject matter By that which
has been for the subject matter of those observations – and as
it is hoped they may be called explanations, the space
occupied is no more than two not very full 8v pages: of the by the
corresponding part of the work at large, no fewer than
pages. In the endeavouring to spread the like
portions of light into them 224 pages as much more space
might have been found requisite than can be allotted to the
whole of the present design.
