No benefit conferred
by law without creating
a right

Art. One exception excepted, no otherwise can
[the] law produce and confer on any man any intended benefit
otherwise than by creating and confering on him a correspondent
right

Correspondent to every
right is a wrong

Correspondent to every right conferred is a wrong
a wrong the commission of or say infliction of which is inhibited or say
prohibited and by such remedies in the nature of things the case
admitts of, endeavoured to be, in so far as may be prevented
or compensated for: as to which remedies see below.

In so far as by the the law law giver a wrong is considered
as having been ommitted, endeavour is used employed by him to prevent
the exercise commission of it, and punishment is commonly employed in
and by such endeavour, punishment and reward being the only
means, and while to the application capable of being made of
punishment there are no bounds, to the application capable of
being made of reward there are limits, and those limits in comparison
extremely narrow ones: reward not being to any considerable
extent capable of being applied but by the help and through
the means of punishment.

Right and wrong mutually
correlative
terms

Right and wrong being correlative terms being
thus mutually correlative of neither of the things can sufficient consideration
be had without consideration at the same time had of the
other. But Yet for the purpose of discourse in a usable
form there be a convenience in speaking on one part thereof
of rights with little mention of wrongs, on the other part of
wrongs with little mention of rights.
