Blackstone

The obligation for to which you have been indebted for your
coat, has, as above, been spoken of as imposed on me.
But this imposi effect by what means in what way or causes has was it been
produced? Answer: by on the following.

On this occasion comes the need of the ideas respectively
presented by the words command, superior, inferior will motives
evil, god, pain-exemption, pleasure punishment, reward
command, superior, inferior, will.

No effective obligation can be imposed but by an adequate
motive or set of motives. A motive is the expectation of
either of eventual evil or of eventual good: of eventual evil,
that is to say of evil as being about to be suffered in the event of
man's not performing the action, in relation to which, it is the
idea of the a portion of the matter of evil that operates as a motive: and so, mutatis mutandis+ +(b) Mutatis mutandis: that is to say those things being changed
which for the purpose require to be changed. This short phrase On this occasion, to save this multitude or words,
has been employed, as being
though in a foreign language, is employed, as in this in many Englishmen in common use. as it is frequently it being in common use, to save the above mentioned multitude of words

in the case where the it is the idea of the a portion of the matter of good that operates
as the motive.⊞1 ⊞1 By the matter of evil understand
a consequent either of pain, pain or of loss of pleasure: by the matter of good, either of pleasure or exemption of pain.(a)
Note (a)
(a) Moral evil supposes physical evil as above. From more any lot of
assumed supposed evil take away all physical evil, what remains is nothing.

Considered as about to be applied or say administered by a
rational agent, in consideration on account of of something which he is considered as displeased with
as having been done by another rational agent, eventual evil as above, is stiled punishment:

The agent who is He by whom the evil is considered as being
eventual good, reward. Considered as having it in his power
to apply such punishment, such rational g agent so stiled was
eventually about to be applied is in respect of such application stiled with
superior, with reference to relation had the person or other being to whom he reference to the other, the superior: the other to whom it is considered as
has it in his power so to apply it. eventually about to be applied, the inferior.

By punishment alone, not by reward, can legal obligation,
– obligation imposed by law – be constituted: by reward is too expensive, and can
two official causes, each of them sufficient in rendering the
production of the effect by reward alone impracticable: one is – the expensiveness of the instrument; the other the
uncertainty if attendant in its efficiency.
not to to operate with sufficient certainty.
