1828 Aug. 23
Blackstone

§.2 Universal
Ch. Jurisprudence

(4) (2) 4 I. Rights
§. Possession
2. legal

11. As to acting without law = extinguished
2. — — — by law

But now suppose you &
he comport yourselves so
& so — not to suffer at the
hands of the law — necessary
to know What treatment
you respectively experience
from the authorities:
otherwise you know no more
than the phrases used by
lawyers — Such knowledge
of no more use than coat
when at the taylor's.

Well then in speaking of law — in speaking
of the treatment which in the two different cases would eventually
be given to the parties you and the tayler in the event of your respectively
comporting yourselves so, and so in, so far as the word possession is employed the proper
language. But now, supposing you and he to comport
yourselves so and so; what is the treatment you would
respectively experience at the hand of the constituted
authorities: the Judges and their subordinates; for, for
the guidance of your conduct, to prevent yourself from
suffering at the hand of these same functionaries, or as
the phrase is — at the hands of the law, thus
eventual consequence it is indisputably necessary you
should be apprised of: otherwise by having that in
the one case you were in legal possession in the other you
were not in legal possession, you would all you would know
is — that on the occasion in question these were the phrases
respectively employed by lawyers: after which supposing
your knowledge to end there it would not be of any more
use to you than your coat was while it was keeping
on the tayler'spegs.
