If the whole list of maleficent acts which by appropriate
punishment the greatest happiness principle requires to
be converted into offences, are denominated, have received their several appropriate denominations, and their denominations
have been entered under their several heads into the Table of Offences in the Offence
Table, the matter it follows that in some way
or other the whole matter of the aggregate of Particular Codes
must in some way or other have been comprehended under
the denom aggregate of the denominations instanced in
the list of General Code: and, how in great the
inconsistency may at first appear to be such however upon examination
will be found to be the fact. For so it is, the case
will be found to be, that the evil whatsoever it be, for the evidence exclusion
of which this or that article in this or that one of the Particular
Codes will be found included is the evil in contemplation
of which a correspondent denomination name of offence is stands inserted
in the General and all-comprehensive Table of Offences.
Thus in the is the Particular Code denominated for the several
domestic relations of Father and Child, Husband and Wife, Master and
Servant, those several Particular Codes will each of them have all for
its object the causing to be rendered by each individual
in the power of relatives the services by the rendering of which
the intended benefit is conferred on the other. Here then if
this or that service which according to him ought to have been rendered for
example by the Husband to the Wife is not rendered to him
here is an offence which will at any rate come under the
general head of Non- or say Non-performance of
service due which will be found in the Table: beside that moreover
names of Offences affecting this same condition in life will may also be
seen in that same Table.
