Blackstone
What is fortunate, of that portion of the language of our law
which is common to us with all nations, there is a part,
nor that an inconsiderable one, which is common to all
functions: a portion, for the words and phrases for the ideas belonging to which, and thence
for the ideas belonging to which, no men, that unless it be to a
public road need travel far from his own fireside: language,
expressive of ideas, the which are at all times in every
man's mind, and to use a one of those phrases which are seeing at least if
not hearing everywhere, come home to "mens business
"and bosoms".
In laying before our readers, and doing that what which
presents itself as being is at the same time requisite and in our power to do towards
bringing those acquainted with Universal jurisprudence – that
is to say with the language of jurisprudence which, as above,
is all there is that is universal in it, the first word we word we shall begin with
shall take in hand, is the word Command. In our language By that word
is showed designated that idea which in our view of the matter is
the fundamental or say the radical idea belonging to jurisprudence,
the idea from which all other the rest may be considered
as derived, the idea, by reference to which the other ideas
belonging to the service, may with most advantage be brought
to view and explained.
Command – where is the child of four years, who by
perpetual experience has not been made acquainted with the
import of it? what child, in whatsoever religious educational
– the parish, or the Christian is not at that age more or less acquainted with
it in its lengthened form – commandments: equivalent to this,
and perhaps rather more frequently employed – the word command
being more particularly employed almost received fit on great occasions.
