Judicatories to which scraps of jurisdiction have
been left, or at different times given, defy the powers of examination
exercised within any compass of which the present sketch
like
this work is susceptible.
Among the principle ones are the following

I. Courts left unabolished: but on account of the narrowness of their
field of jurisdiction, and of their power to give execution and effect
to their judgments seldom if ever resorted to

II. Courts judging and presiding according to Roman the system of Law
which originated in ancient Rome and has been continued
on in Subject to modern variation is respect of the countries
in the continent of Europe.
1. Ecclesiastic Law Courts
2. Admiralty Law Courts

III. Courts of comparatively recent institution: being instituted
altogether by Statue Law

1. Courts composed of Justices of the Peace sitting in
General Sessions: for their being held four times a year termed
Quarter Sessions. These proceed mostly with in most cases act not without a Jury: especially
cases named criminal.

2. Courts composed of Justices of the Peace sitting in numbers
from 2 to any higher number in Sessions acted with
reference to the above General Sessions — Petty Sessions.

3. Courts consisting of a Justice of Peace acting singly
In this case and the last, a Jury is in no instance
employed.
