Blackstone familiarized explained
The end of all law – meaning the general and
all comprehensive end is or ought to be the greatest happiness
of the community in question.
The bringing to view the immediately subordinate end four words
subsistence, abundance, equality and security may serve.+ + ☞ Quere whether on this occasion any advantage can be derived from the matter contained in J.B's Leading Principle &c.
By Understand by equality – not absolute equality wheth equality in so far as the attainment
of this is consistent with the attainment of those three other ends: not absolute equality – a state of things which
in the nature of things could not have place for a single
moment, nor if it had place for a single moment, continue
to have place for two moments together.
To shew how in the most beneficial manner provision
may be made for universality of subsistence, and the maximum
of abundance belongs to the art and science stiled political economy.
Among the arrangements by which this provision
for those desirable results benefits is made those which contribute
towards it in the greatest degree are those by which
general security is conferred and established: of which presently.
By security is meant understand security for such benefits as
it is in the nature of law to confer and establish: such benefits
may be, all of them, considered included under the name word of rights.
