1828 Aug. 2
Blackstone

We begin with that part those parts of the law which concerns concern
each mans rights private rights and obligations in particular in particular: it is that
part which we are most strongly it is most strongly and
constantly and universally our interest to be acquainted with: it is this
which, as the phrase is, comes most to our
businesses and bosoms. That part which concerns
the form of government, and the description of the hands
among in which the powers of it are lodged may without
inconvenience be left to subsequent consideration.

We are, all of us, subject to the exercise of those powers,
few of us in comparison it is but a comparatively small part of our whole number
that possess have any share in the aggregate of those same
powers, and of those again it is but a small portion
who will prof take in hand a sort view of abridgment ne
so general in its description and consequently so far
from adequate as this can not but be in preference to that
given by Blackstone and his continuation.

We are exposed to suffer, all of us, for not want of being
sufficiently acquainted with our rights: we are exposed
to suffer in a still greater degree for not being sufficiently
acquainted with our obligations: and this in a still greater
degree, for death, suffered as a punishment, may be among
the results of ignorance.

We are not exposed to suffer in any such degree
for want of being sufficiently acquainted with the manner
in which the powers of government are distributed.

We have power, each one of us over his our own actions: we
have no power any one of us over the actions of those in
whose hands the power of government are lodged.
