To the execution of this work, the course that will we shall
pursue is be seen taken is all along this. For the polar star –
for the source of guidance – we shall all along take the
greatest happiness principle. In the general description thus
given of it, this principle not only ought to be, but actually
is pursued, in and by all governments, not only the government
under which it is our lot to share, but every other likewise.
By the constitution of unchangeable and universally exemplified
constitution of human nature, as well as of all sensitive
nature, his own greatest happiness is the same of everybody:
it is so in private life: it is so in public life.
It is so on the part of those who be are without political power:
possess the least, and those who possess the great most
of it included. By him whose power sees no other that
shares with it and controuls it – his own happiness is the
only happiness that by the pursuit of which in the general time of his life, his conduct
will be directed: all other the happiness of all will to him be
an object, if not of absolute, of comparative neglect: and
in case of collision, and to the extent of the collision
of constant sacrifice. On the other hand But, on the other hand in proportion
as he sees and feels others sharing with him, in the possession
and exercise of such his power, he will feel himself
under the obligation a necessity of consulting, on the several
occasions, or at least appearing and thence professing
to there also, and to wit of acting accordingly.
