Blackstone
On each several occasion, we shall accordingly
brought over state in the first place which present themselves to one
view as being on that occasion the dictates of the greatest
happiness principle – meaning all along the greatest happiness
of the whole community in question – namely that
of England – taken together. That done, we shall
proceed to bring to view state, with as great a degree of clearness
correctness and comprehensiveness in the necessary hands
to this our design presents, what according to or conception,
are the arrangements that have place under English law
as it is. In so doing we shall all along take for the
object of reference, the account given of it by Blackstone
in his work entitled the Commentaries on the Laws of
England: this being the work to which for upward of
sixty years past all persons, who with or without professional
views have been desirous to obtain more or less
of instruction, have in the first place been in the habit
of seeking it.
