Preface
Law as it is. Law as it ought to be Here these two
appellations will be disting denominated denominated and distinguished
two parties of discourse of saddly different compliance
it must be confessed, which throughout will have to travel accompany
in company each other through the whole of the explanation given
or advanced to be given in the course of these pages
Law as it is speaks for itself. But for this, ever
would its accompaniment — its but unhappily unavoidable
accompaniment, have attempted to present itself
to the class of readers to whose use the is dedicated
By law as it In the expression Law as it ought to be
the reader is desired to understand neither more nor less
than a conception throughout entertained by an individual
as to what on each occasion the law ought to be — formed and entertained
by an individual by whom the enquiry has been the business of
a long list devoted almost exclusively to this one object:
formed and entertained by that one individual and rendered
without the approbation of others in the number,
and adopted by the author of the by far the principal part
or bulk of all these the ensuing pages.
By these phrases to whom these once explained, circumlocution
in abundance and variety of expression for the in consummate
abundance which otherwise would have been to be employed otherwise for the conveyance of one
and the same idea, will be sacred.
