Preface
4 This work how far open
to objection

As to a code, had avoidance been possible the
endeavour would here have been to avoid altogether the mention
of it, and the mention of it — yes and even the remotest
mention attention to it. But this was found altogether impossible.
Possible how should it have been found to be when by every
time written or read upon the subject thought bestowed
upon the subject, the demand for this one thing needful
— the demand for it — and the deplorableness of the
we are all in for the want of it, was continually attached
upon the mind, and pressed upon it with a fever to which
all resistance is impossible.

England on the score of his laws an object of envy to all surrounding nations?
Alas, so far as depends upon the existence of a rule of nature will how much more truly may it not be said
that all surrounding nations are objects of mercy to England!
