Introduction

Use of this work to non lawyers,
to take it as guide to
conduct.
Now then, of among the all the uses, which it can happen to any
reader not proposing to betake himself to the law for
a profession, it can happen to propose to himself to desire from
such a work as the present, what is the need most important?
Unquestionably, the taking it for a guide to his conduct [in to all such
matters] in so far as it is upon the state of the law, and of his
acquaintance with it, that the welfare prosperity and comfort of his
life will depend.
A Portion of comfort derived
from the law, without a
man's knowing any thing
about it.
To a certain degree the comfort derived by a you
man from the law in its present state, be that state what it
may, is deriv may be experienced by him independently
of any acquaintance he has with it: say use without his
knowing any thing about the matter.
But compared with comfort
he cannot derive from
it without knowing it, it is
very small. As knowledge
of whole impossible & do — of
parts possible — to possess
this, and by which his interest
comfort is greatly affected in
every one's interest
But in the comparison of that which he you can not
derive from it, otherwise than in proportion to what be known
of it, that part is small indeed: true it is that with that
portion in which the knowledge it his comfort of his life depends it is interest to be acquainted
to have Unfortunately acquaintance to possess knowledge, in the
largest proportion possible: and in so far as relative acquaintance
with the entire whole is impossible, and selection possible
it is in his interest to possess the knowledge of that by which his comfort is in
a greater degree affected, in preference to all parts by which
his interest is in a less great considerable degree affected.
