At the very threshold, the reader will be introduced in find himself in company
four no fewer than four most important and highly busily active personages at once: and
Universal Jurisprudence at every step he will find himself
receiving instructions from either th some one of them or some
other. Some one of them: for unfortunately he will find them but
too often not agreeing together quite so well as it were to be
wished they did.

These are — 1. Universal Jurisprudence. 2. Law as she

some little less, will perhaps, it is hoped be seen to be given to
the scene: and if on presenting them to the parly reader in the such their
character of persons, there be a spin of fiction, it is not
at any rate for learned gentlemen to make any very
strong objection on that score. Alas! if no worse use
than is made here had ever been made of fiction, in the
field of law, the field of human life society would not be quite
so full of human misery as it is seen and felt to be.

Follows then in this little theatre, the legal Law drama,
as the French would say call it a Proverbe: and those Characters
in it but four: and they are those the above.
