Blackstone
Use of this work to select
particular parts from
the overwhelming mass of
law, describes others, & indicate
sources for obtaining
information in detail.
Blackstone at the title
of this work
1. Because, his
ways associated with law
2. – Impossible to give
more than very small portion
of the whole – the Book
from to which readers referred
for most satisfactory
account of the law – is Blackstone's.
3. Not only so, but all
others repulsive.
Use of this to non lawyers
to serve as a guide
to their conduct.
A portion comfort derived
from the law, without
any acquaintance
with it.
But compared with
comfort he cannot derive
from it without knowing
– very small. To possess
the whole is impossible
do. parts possible –
every one's interest to
know this.
---page break---
Unfortunately what it
is interest of men at large
to possess, it is do. of an influential
class – they shd
not possess.
This they cannot deny
but may say to consequences
of this admission
I will on this occasion
sacrifice mine to general
interest.
Quantity of influence
determines conduct of the
bodies – this directed always
to their interest.
So with the class in question,
unless their nature
changed.
Perhaps 1 in 1000 ready to
make the sacrifice, but if
1 in 3 – the practical result
wd be the same.
Call this by any names
– it is the cause of demand
for such a work as this.
Not a useful syllable omitted nor
Wideness of field already
indicated.
